Background of the Study:
Government health insurance schemes have been introduced to enhance access to healthcare services, particularly for low-income populations in Abeokuta North Local Government Area. These schemes aim to reduce financial barriers to medical care, thus improving health outcomes and reducing the incidence of catastrophic health expenditures (Adeniyi, 2023). By pooling risk and resources, health insurance schemes facilitate the provision of essential health services, including preventive care, treatment, and rehabilitation (Okafor, 2024). However, implementation challenges such as low enrollment rates, inadequate funding, and bureaucratic inefficiencies persist (Babatunde, 2023). Recent reforms have sought to streamline processes and increase public awareness, yet disparities in access and quality of care remain a concern. This study examines the impact of these health insurance schemes on healthcare access, aiming to identify policy gaps and recommend improvements for a more equitable healthcare system (Olu, 2024).
Statement of the Problem:
Despite the implementation of government health insurance schemes, many residents in Abeokuta North still face challenges in accessing quality healthcare. Low enrollment and administrative inefficiencies have resulted in uneven service distribution, undermining the intended benefits of these schemes (Akinola, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
To assess the impact of government health insurance on healthcare access.
To identify challenges in scheme implementation.
To recommend improvements to enhance service delivery.
Research Questions:
How do government health insurance schemes affect healthcare access?
What are the major challenges in implementing these schemes?
What strategies can improve healthcare service delivery?
Research Hypotheses:
Health insurance schemes improve access to healthcare services.
Administrative inefficiencies negatively affect scheme performance.
Increased public awareness enhances scheme effectiveness.
Significance of the Study:
This study is significant in highlighting the role of health insurance in improving access to healthcare. Its findings will inform policy decisions aimed at optimizing scheme performance and ensuring equitable healthcare delivery for all residents (Chukwu, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the topic only.
